Samarpan Insights on Understanding Self-Regulation With Speaker Lou Lebentz

In a powerful step towards advancing trauma-informed care in India, Samarpan Recovery hosted a three-day workshop with internationally acclaimed trauma specialist Lou Lebentz at its Mulshi campus near Pune. Lou, a globally recognised therapist, trainer, and founder of The Voyage® Professional Training Suite, has over two decades of experience in trauma education rooted in neuroscience, somatic healing, and compassionate communication.

The immersive workshop ran from July 22nd to 24th and brought together Samarpan’s rehabilitation and outpatient clinic (OPC) teams for two of Lou’s signature modules - Essentials Training for all staff and the more advanced Trauma-Aware Professional Training (TAPT) for clinicians. Through case discussions, somatic exercises, and interactive dialogue, participants explored how trauma affects the brain and behaviour, and how care can be reshaped through empathy, regulation, and relational connection.

Speaking about the training, Lou said, “Trauma is often the invisible thread running through many mental health and addiction issues. Without recognising this, we risk treating symptoms without addressing the root causes. Trauma-informed care ensures that staff not only provide excellent clinical support but also create a deeply compassionate environment.”

Samarpan leaders also reflected on the impact of the workshop. Martin Peters, COO, called it a move away from outdated approaches toward modern, globally recognised best practices that will improve outcomes and reduce stigma. Obi Unaka, CCO, described it as a turning point that deepened our collective understanding of trauma and reaffirmed our commitment to making every aspect of care trauma-informed.

By hosting this milestone training, Samarpan Recovery strengthens its vision of bringing world-class, compassionate, evidence-based treatment to India, ensuring that every client’s healing journey is met with awareness, sensitivity, and respect.
