Building a robust support network is foundational for relapse prevention. It is important to enlist people who will be understanding of your journey and not critical. Having a reliable support system gives you a safety net during difficult times, and provides you with encouragement, understanding and accountability.
12-step programs such as Narcotics Anonymous or Alcoholics Anonymous can form an important part of your relapse prevention strategy. 12 step meetings provide a supportive environment where people with addiction problems share their experiences and receive guidance from other people who have faced similar struggles.
Hearing other people’s stories can remind you of the consequences of addiction, and also give you hope that long-term recovery from addiction is possible. You can also enhance your support system with the people you meet at these meetings.
Triggers are the things that cause addicted people to relapse. A trigger could be a person, a place, a thought or emotion. Take time to reflect on past experiences and try to pinpoint the circumstances that led to your last relapse. Once you have identified this, develop a plan to manage and respond to these triggers.
This work is often challenging to do yourself, as your triggers may not be obvious to you. Talking it through with another person can be an immense help throughout this process.
You should begin to replace addictive behaviors with healthy coping mechanisms as part of your relapse prevention. While stress and challenges are inevitable, you can still respond to them in a positive way.
Try meditating, exercising or starting a new hobby. These activities can provide you with alternatives for managing stress and emotional discomfort, instead of relying on drugs or alcohol.
Establishing a structured daily routine can be a powerful ally in relapse prevention. A routine provides a sense of stability, predictability, and purpose, which reduces the likelihood of you making impulsive and destructive decisions.
Make sure you engage in regular exercise, social with friends and have a healthy sleep schedule. A well-rounded routine prioritizes self-care, which provides a foundation for emotional resilience, reducing your risk of relapse.
Setting clear and achievable goals is so important to providing motivation in your recovery. In the early days, staying clean just for the day is a big win. As time goes on, you should focus on bigger goals, while making sure to break these goals down into smaller, manageable steps that you can celebrate along the way.
Avoid overwhelming yourself with unrealistic expectations. Recognize that recovery is a gradual process, and setbacks are a natural part of the journey.
All the above tips can be useful for preventing relapse. But many people with addiction problems still experience frequent relapse, even when they incorporate these tips into their lives.
When someone is in the grip of a deep addiction, their mind becomes hijacked, and willpower alone is no longer enough. At this point, the most potent relapse prevention tip is getting professional help.

We believe that addressing relapse can sometimes take a while longer for some people, which is one of the reasons we offer all our clients aftercare sessions, either at our center in Pune, our center in Mumbai, or online.
