Not All Treatment Is Equal

Not All Treatment Is Equal

Obviously, for people looking for treatment for substance abuse and considering multiple treatment facilities, price is often a factor. There are a multitude of options available for people in terms of cost, as well as approach.

But there is also the “cost” of treatment versus the “price” of treatment.

In the addiction field in India there are a wide variety of treatment facilities. Some of these are more expensive, some less expensive and some are extremely cheap. Of course, there are significant differences in these programs, the experience and quality of staff, the treatment approaches, the facilities and also in the outcomes.

Quality is a significant factor in terms of price for all things. Something that’s a better quality will often cost a bit more. It’s the same in healthcare, which includes addiction treatment programs, just as it is when looking at buying a car – you will get what you pay for.

At Samarpan we are very focused on seeing you not only succeed in treatment, but achieving positive outcomes from your treatment stay. That’s critical. The success rates of many rehabs vary dramatically, although how rehabs will choose to define what is success will also very. We understand that looking at outcomes is important, and for that reason we just don’t look at if a person is clean and sober after a period of time. Effective treatment should be measured on a number of points, such as a reduction in substance use, criminal activity, an improvement in mental and physical health, family and living conditions, education/employment status, and social connectedness.

Some of these places are “affordable” but may not be very good. They’re a factory version of treatment, where “one size fits all” in terms of a treatment model, no matter what your history is, the substance involved, or your psychological profile. They may also have untrained staff, that have little or no addiction or mental health specific training or credentials. Furthermore, the program may not be using evidenced based approaches to treatment, or may be using dated approaches. At Samarpan our approaches to treatment are aligned to best practice and continually developing our staff with training and supervision to ensure that our program keeps up to date in the latest approaches to treatment.

Other centres have many beds to fill because in their version of treatment the profit is based on volume. They may lack individual care and every person is treated the same, when in fact, no two people are the same. The larger a center, the more of an “institution” it can be, the less individual care you can expect. Suffice to say, that often treatment centres will cross pollinate their community with people with varying other issues – so it’s certainly not uncommon in India to find acute mental health patients and dementia patients being within the same facility as people within a Substance Abuse Program. It’s also not uncommon for clients to be involuntarily detained for treatment, whereas at Samarpan all clients are of a voluntary nature.

At Samarpan we are a specialist Substance Abuse Primary Residential Treatment Program - that means we work only with people who have Substance Abuse issues and may have other co-occurring disorders. We won’t just admit someone to fill a bed, and clients are expected to follow the program laid out, and not negotiate their own style of program.

The most important part of any treatment facility is the individual treatment you will receive. The staff must be highly qualified and experienced to provide the best possible care. Samarpan has recognised Addictions therapists with internationally recognised qualifications running the programs, with other staff undertaking further professional development to achieve recognisable addiction credentials. At Samarpan we have continued to invest in staff training, and our centre has achieved The CENAPS Centre of Excellence for it’s use of the Relapse Prevention model in treatment, and having all staff trained in The Gorski -CENAPS Model.

Of course, when considering a rehab, you do need to consider the other aspects of the facility itself – your private - ensuite room, the food and nutrition, the physical training program and other complementary approaches such as massage, reiki, yoga, EFT and mediation and various other activities, communal areas and the overall environment. Rehab is hard work… so don’t overlook the other factors that will play an important part in your recovery. We have created an environment at Samarpan whereby everything within the centre is deliberately set up, to ensure that we address as much as possible with our clients whilst in treatment.

Some treatment centers will not do the levels of assessments we do. They will not offer the number of one-on-one treatment sessions we do at Samarpan because those sessions require a licensed professional and cost more — but they’re also extremely important at getting to the root causes of your addiction so it can be effectively treated. Often, you’ll only get one or two one-on-one sessions per week in these places and often clients do not even have a treatment plan that they have collaboratively worked on with their therapist.

Also, at Samarpan, we include a full nursing and health check-up on admission, and your health will be monitored daily by our 24-hour Nursing staff and supervised by our Medical Officer and Consultant Psychiatrist. Many places do not include this, but we feel your health and safety going into treatment is critical and should not be overlooked.

In some other facilities, the group sessions often have too many people, so most people do not get to contribute and be a part of it, and people can “hide” in the crowd. Group Therapy sessions to be effective should not have a group larger than 12 otherwise it becomes unmanageable and clients will effectively get nothing out of these sessions.

These programs will not have all the treatment options we are able to provide (CBT, 12-Step Facilitation, Relapse Prevention, DBT, Mindfulness, ACT and Art Therapy) so that we can truly customize your treatment program around your needs. They may offer 12-Step Work however, this is not a replacement for therapy. AA is very clear that it is a program offering recommendations and traditions intended to help individuals achieve sobriety and that there are no professional facilitators.

Additionally, in many places the staff do not have the level of qualifications and experience as ours. We ensure that we only hire people with formal qualifications in Mental Health, Psychology and addictions, and have recruited staff from overseas to bring an international flavour to our treatment experience.

Lastly, there is the quality of the food, the comfort of our facility, the many things you have to do here when you’re not in treatment. It all adds up. We know that providing a therapeutic environment where you are comfortable, whilst being uncomfortable is a necessity.

But the primary difference is this – you need quality treatment. That quality translates directly to outcomes. Let’s face it, if going through treatment at a less expensive facility only means you’ll end up going through treatment again, it’s actually more expensive. It’s absolutely imperative that looking for treatment, it should not be based on cost alone. There are a number of important questions that you need to ask, and we recommend some of these questions as important:

    1. What type of treatment approaches does your program use?

    2. Are your approaches individualised to each client’s needs?

    3. Is your program licensed and accredited?

    4. How long are your rehab programs?

    5. How much do your programs cost?

    6. Do you provide treatment plans and discharge plans for clients?

    7. Are you able to treat clients with a dual diagnosis?

    8. What type of continuing care services do you offer after treatment?

    9. Does your program offer family support?

    10. What is the background of your staff?

    11. What makes your program different?

    12. What model of relapse prevention do you offer?

So, although cost is important, it’ should not be the most important consideration. Your treatment and outcome are…and they are determined by a lot more than price, and that’s why at Samarpan, we realise that we may not be the cheapest provider in India, but we certainly offer a thorough and structured continuum of care, whereby we plan and track our clients through their treatment journey, and also once they leave.

That way we continually evaluate the efficacy and experience of our program to continue to improve and evolve it and work to the highest standards.
